Canilens is one of the best and most popular extracurricular activity in Canisius College. Canilens had gained numerous achievement and raise the prestige of Canisius College in Jakarta.According to FPSI, Canilens is the backbone of High School photography and one of the best in Jakarta.
Canilens majors exclusively in learning and mastering photography. This extracurricular activities gathers three times a week and divided into three classes: Basic, Advance I and Advance II. This extracurricular activity played an important role in Canisius College.
Canilens, one of the oldest non-sports extracurricular in Canisius College Canilens, was established on October 23rd, 1981 by a number of students who loved photography. The students who started these activities were: Benyamin, Iwa, Herry Ali, Didit, and their friends.
One of the many achievement gained by Canilens was the 16 exhibition during the period of 1982 to 1997. It doesn’t stop there, because every year Canilens actively made at least one exhibition every year and actively participating in numerous competitions in every level. In 2005 there was a big achievement when five Canilens members became the representative of Indonesia in a South East Asian level photography competition in Singapore.
No doubt that these achievements made Canilens the pinnacle of high school photography extracurricular and organization in Jakarta. As a real visualization of 3C, Canilens once held a social act for the flood victims in February 2007 when Jakarta was engulfed in flood. The social act under the name Canilens Care aimed to raise funds by exhibiting flood related photographs of a refugee camp in big offices in Jakarta. During the Canisius College’s 80th Anniversary, Canilens held an exhibition of student photography for general consumption by the visitors. The show exhibits numerous memorial photographs such as the construction of Canisius’ new building and activities of the students during the 1950s.
As an organization, Canilens always keep tab with other communities such as Tarakanita 1’s SFG (Sanggar Fotografi), a traditional hunting partner and a new partner, POS (Photography of Sanur) from Saint Ursula. Canilens also introduced a new feature: www.canilens.com, which has become a virtual facility to strengthen the bond between active Canilens members and non-active and alumni.
